Wilderness Initiative (Hiking, Mountain Climbing, Cultural & Recreational Outings)
A major issue facing those in recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism is establishing new patterns of drug-free living.  Most recovering addicts and alcoholics experience symptoms of PAWS (Post-Acute Withdrawal Symptoms) for many months after cessation of drug use.  PAWS can present a significant challenge for the recovering individual.  It is essential to find natural methods releasing dopamine in the brains of those in recovery. Since its inception, the Matt Talbot Center has used experientially based therapeutic techniques to assist those experiencing symptoms of PAWS (intense boredom, fatigue, depressed mood, sleeplessness, memory difficulties).  Experiential therapeutic approaches, like the Wilderness Initiative, which allows members to spend time in the wilderness or in pursuit of recreational opportunities, have been found to be extremely successful in assisting in those in recovery with symptoms of PAWS.
Weight Room
Recovering addicts and alcoholics thrive when given the opportunity to exercise.   The Matt Talbot Center has been fortunate to receive a gift of professional workout equipment from a major gym.  As such, all members who are physically capable of participating in a fitness program have the opportunity to use the equipment afternoons most days of the week.  This program of fitness is a major step in restoring physical health and mental well-being to members in recovery.
